IRS Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) allows you to authorize any individual, corporation, firm, organization, or partnership to inspect or receive your confidential tax information for the tax type and years you specify. Unlike a Power of Attorney, it does not authorize the designee to represent you before the IRS. For official instructions and the latest version of this form, visit the official IRS page.

Start Sending FreeThe IRS fax number for Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) depends on your location. Eastern states use 1-855-214-7519, western states use 1-855-214-7522, and international filers have separate numbers. Find the correct fax number for your state in the table above.
Form 8821 only authorizes a third party to view your tax information — they cannot represent you or take action on your behalf. Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) grants full representation rights. Use Form 8821 if you just need someone to access your tax records without acting for you.
You can designate any individual or organization to receive your tax information, including accountants, financial advisors, family members, or mortgage lenders. Unlike Form 2848, the designee does not need to be an enrolled practitioner.
A Form 8821 authorization remains in effect until you revoke it or the IRS receives a new Form 8821 for the same tax matters. You can revoke it at any time by faxing a written revocation or a new Form 8821 with 'REVOKE' written across the top.
